No Indian state packs more carved stone into one itinerary. Karnataka gives you four UNESCO listings, the greatest Hindu ruin field in the country, India's most theatrical royal festival and hill country where the coffee was planted by monks.
Karnataka stretches from a 320 km Arabian Sea coast up the Western Ghats onto the Deccan plateau, which covers most of the state at 600 to 900 m. That plateau height is why Bengaluru is mild all year while Hampi, in the dry northern interior, passes 40°C in April. The Ghats hold rainforest, coffee and the Kaveri headwaters, and the north is black-soil cotton and granite country.
Four UNESCO listings sit here. Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire until 1565, and its boulder landscape holds a temple city of markets, aqueducts and a stone chariot. Pattadakal is where the Chalukyas tried out north and south Indian temple forms side by side in the 8th century. The Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas at Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura were added in 2023, and the Western Ghats listing covers the southern forests.
What draws Western visitors is the combination. Hampi has been a European backpacker fixture for decades and rewards four days. Mysuru Dasara, over ten nights in September or October, ends with a caparisoned elephant procession and a palace lit by nearly a hundred thousand bulbs. Coorg and Chikmagalur offer estate stays where the coffee has been grown since the 1600s.
You travel as our guest, not as a booking number. One named person looks after you from the first video call to the drive back to the airport, and explains the meaning behind everything you are looking at.
In Karnataka that matters most where the crowds are thickest and the customs least familiar.
Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and Islamic dates follow lunar calendars, so each year shifts. We confirm every date against the panchang before a departure goes on sale.
| Festival | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Mysuru Dasara | Sep-Oct, 10 days (lunar calendar) | One of India's great festivals. The Mysuru palace is lit by tens of thousands of bulbs each night, and the final Vijayadashami day brings the Jamboo Savari elephant procession through the city. |
| Hampi Utsav (Vijaya Utsav) | Jan-Feb, three days | A state festival staged among the Vijayanagara ruins, with classical music and dance on temple platforms, processions and a light show on the Virupaksha gopuram. |
| Ugadi | Mar-Apr (lunar new year) | The Kannada and Telugu new year, marked with neem and jaggery eaten together, mango-leaf doorways and a traditional reading of the year's almanac. |
| Karaga, Bengaluru | Mar-Apr (lunar calendar) | An all-night Thigala community festival in the old city, where a priest in women's dress carries a flowered earthen pot through the streets before dawn. |
| Kambala buffalo races | Nov-Mar, coastal districts | Paired buffaloes are raced through flooded paddy tracks in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, a coastal sport with large village crowds. |
| Mahamastakabhisheka, Shravanabelagola | Once every 12 years, next cycle after 2030 | The anointing of the 17 m Gomateshwara Jain monolith from scaffolding above its head, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. |
| Pattadakal Dance Festival | Jan-Feb, a few days | Classical dancers perform against the floodlit 8th century Chalukya temples, with the Badami and Aihole sites open late. |
| Gokarna Shivaratri and rathotsava | Feb-Mar (lunar calendar) | The Mahabaleshwar temple town holds an all-night vigil and a chariot procession pulled through the main street by pilgrims. |
Ranked the way a local host would feed you, starting with the dish you should not leave without.
The Ghat waterfalls peak from July to October and Jog Falls is reduced to trickles by March. Kaveri currents are deceptively strong below the Shivanasamudra and Coorg falls, crocodiles are present at Ranganathittu and the river below it, and swimming above any fall lip is how most accidents here happen.
Properties we would put our own guests in. Your package includes the level you choose, and we hold rooms before festival dates.

October to March is the right window across the whole state, with Bengaluru around 27°C, the Ghats cool and the northern ruins finally walkable. Time it to Dasara in September or October if you can, and keep Hampi and Badami out of April and May, when they pass 40°C.
| Months | Season | Day temperature | What to expect |

On a Chikmagalur estate you pick ripe cherries during the December to February harvest, then sit at the cupping table while the planter scores the lots. You learn why shade-grown Karnataka arabica tastes the way it does, and taste your own picking.
In the days before Vijayadashami a mahout family introduces you to the elephants training to carry the golden howdah, feeding and bathing them at camp. They explain the selection, the weight of the howdah and the discipline of the walk.
A sculpture specialist spends three hours on a single wall at Halebidu, following the Ramayana and Mahabharata registers, the elephant and horse bands and the signed work of individual masons from the 1100s.
A Kodava household in Coorg cooks pandi curry with their own kachampuli, the dark sour vinegar made from a Ghat fruit. Over dinner they explain the community's ancestor veneration, gun culture and regiment history.
For the density of great stone. Hampi is the largest Hindu ruin field in India, Pattadakal is where South Indian temple architecture was worked out, and the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu carry carving nobody has matched since. Then there is Dasara in Mysuru and coffee country in the Ghats.
October to March. Bengaluru sits near 27°C year-round thanks to its 900 m altitude, the Ghats are cool and clear, and the northern ruins drop to a walkable 30°C. Dasara falls in September or October. Avoid April and May in Hampi and Badami, where it exceeds 40°C.
It is one of India's easier states for independent travel, and Bengaluru, Mysuru and Hampi all see long-stay foreign visitors. English is widely spoken. Use app cabs in the cities at night, avoid the Hampi boulder fields alone after dark, and dress modestly at temple sites, which is expected rather than optional.
Yes, the India e-Visa, applied for online at least four days before travel. The thirty-day double-entry version is around US$25, with one and five year options also available. Bengaluru airport has e-Visa counters, and most European long-haul flights arrive late in the evening or overnight.
Our ground cost runs from about US$1,780 for seven nights of coastal yakshagana and temples to US$2,980 for the eleven-night UNESCO stone circuit. Dasara is roughly US$2,250 for eight nights with reserved procession seating, and the wildlife itinerary US$2,480. Hotels, transport, guides, permits and entries are included.
Ten to twelve for a proper first trip: three or four at Hampi, two for Mysuru, two for the Hoysala temples and two or three in coffee country. A week works if you stick to the southern triangle of Bengaluru, Mysuru and Coorg. Hampi alone deserves four days.
Karnataka is one of the best vegetarian states in India, and the Udupi tradition behind every South Indian restaurant worldwide started here. Heat is moderate on the plateau and sharper on the coast. Coorg and the coast are strongly meat and fish eating. Vegans should ask about ghee, curd and coconut milk.
Ten nights in September or October, following the lunar calendar. The palace and the main streets are lit each evening, with concerts in front of the building and on Chamundi hill. The last day, Vijayadashami, brings the Jamboo Savari, when a caparisoned elephant carries the golden howdah through the city.
Bengaluru to Mysuru is two to two and a half hours by Vande Bharat. Hampi is an overnight train to Hosapete or a short flight to Hubballi or Vidyanagar plus a drive. Coorg and Chikmagalur have no railway, so they are five to six hour road transfers, which is why most itineraries use a car and driver.
Karnataka is not a dry state. Bengaluru has India's densest cluster of microbreweries, and bars operate in all the main towns. Hampi is the exception that matters: it is a temple site and alcohol is restricted around the Virupaksha area, with quieter rules on the river's north bank. Gokarna is similarly conservative.
Each has a full guide of its own, with its own food, heritage, hotels, trains and tours.
