Twenty-One Day Panchakarma

Kovalam is three crescent beaches below a red-and-white lighthouse, 16 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram airport. It has been receiving European visitors since the 1970s, and the coast south of it holds the densest cluster of government-classified Ayurveda centres in India.
Kovalam sits where the Western Ghats come closest to the Arabian Sea, so the coast here is rocky headlands with sand pockets between them rather than one long strand. The three main bays are Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra, separated by promontories you can walk around at low tide. The Vizhinjam lighthouse on the southern headland is 36 metres tall and climbable, and India's first deep-water transshipment port is being built just beyond it.
This was a Travancore royal retreat long before it was a resort. The maharaja's guest house on Halcyon Castle hill became the first hotel in the 1930s, and by the 1970s Kovalam was on the overland hippie route from Europe. That early European trade is why the Ayurveda industry settled here first, and why Chowara and Pulinkudi to the south now hold a run of Green Leaf and Olive Leaf classified centres.
What brings Germans, Britons and Scandinavians back each year is the treatment, not the sand. A proper course starts with a registered physician reading your pulse and prescribing, then runs fourteen to twenty-one days of therapy, diet, early nights and no alcohol. Between sessions there is the Vizhinjam rock-cut cave, the capital's museums half an hour away, and catamarans landing sardines at dawn.
You travel as our guest, not as a booking number. One named person looks after you from the first video call to the drive back to the airport, and explains the meaning behind everything you are looking at.
In Kovalam that matters most where the crowds are thickest and the customs least familiar.
Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and Islamic dates follow lunar calendars, so each year shifts. We confirm every date against the panchang before a departure goes on sale.
| Festival | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Attukal Pongala | Feb-Mar | In Thiruvananthapuram, hundreds of thousands of women cook rice offerings on street hearths over several kilometres. |
| Beach Festival, Kovalam | Dec-Jan | Kathakali, Mohiniyattam and Kalaripayattu staged on the sand, with food stalls along Lighthouse Beach. |
| Onam | Aug-Sep | Flower carpets, the sadya feast and village tug-of-war in the fishing settlements behind the bays. |
| Arattu at Padmanabhaswamy | Mar-Apr and Oct-Nov | The capital's temple deity is taken in procession to Shanghumugham beach for a sea bath, twice a year. |
| Vizhinjam church feast | Nov-Dec | The Latin Catholic fishing village holds a patronal feast with decorated boats and a shore procession. |
| Karkidaka Vavu | Jul-Aug | Ancestral offerings are made on the beaches during the monsoon month, which is also the Ayurveda season. |
Ranked the way a local host would feed you, starting with the dish you should not leave without.
November to March is the swimming season, when lifeguards fly flags on Lighthouse and Samudra. The shelf drops away quickly here and the May to September swell generates rip currents that catch strong swimmers, so stay between the flags and treat the rocks at the headlands as out of bounds.
Properties we would put our own guests in. Your package includes the level you choose, and we hold rooms before festival dates.
| Place | What it is |
|---|---|
| Lighthouse Beach shack strip | Open-fronted restaurants with sea-facing tables serving beer and grilled fish until around eleven. |
| Kovalam Beach Festival stage | At new year, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam and Kalaripayattu are performed on a temporary stage on the sand. |
| Nishagandhi and Kanakakkunnu, Thiruvananthapuram | The capital's open-air auditorium and palace grounds host classical dance and music seasons 40 minutes away. |
| Hotel bars, Samudra and Pulinkudi | Kerala licenses alcohol tightly, so sunset drinks happen in hotel bars rather than in independent clubs. |
| Ayurveda centre evenings | Residential patients get yoga, lectures and kathakali demonstrations instead of a bar, since alcohol is prohibited during treatment. |
| Airport or route | Detail |
|---|---|
| Thiruvananthapuram, TRV | 16 kilometres north, 40 minutes by road, which makes Kovalam the easiest beach transfer in India. |
| From the UK and Europe | One change at Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, around 11 to 13 hours flying from London, Frankfurt or Paris. |
| From the USA | Two legs via a Gulf hub, 21 to 25 hours from New York, Chicago or Washington. |
| Colombo connection | Short hops from Colombo make combined Sri Lanka and Kerala trips straightforward. |
| Cochin International, COK | 220 kilometres north, 5 hours, used when fares or schedules favour it over TRV. |
| Route or station | Detail |
|---|---|
| Thiruvananthapuram Central, TVC | 14 kilometres, the state's busiest station, 35 to 45 minutes by taxi to the bays. |
| Vande Bharat to Kasaragod | A daily chair-car service running the length of Kerala in about eight hours from the capital. |
| Chennai to Thiruvananthapuram | Overnight expresses of 15 to 17 hours, with second AC the comfortable choice. |
| Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram | Around 17 to 18 hours via Coimbatore and Ernakulam on the overnight services. |
| Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram | 4 to 5 hours on the coastal line, with frequent daytime trains through Kollam and Varkala. |
November to March gives the calmest sea and the most reliable sun, with December and January the busiest. For Ayurveda, June to August is the traditional and best season, while April and May are the months to avoid for humidity.
| Months | Season | Day temperature | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec-Feb | Dry and warm | 24-32°C / 75-90°F | The main season, with calm water, flagged swimming and cool enough evenings to eat outside. |
| Mar-May | Hot and humid | 26-34°C / 79-93°F | Strong sun and high humidity; treatment rooms and shaded cliffs are where the days are spent. |
| Jun-Aug | Southwest monsoon | 24-30°C / 75-86°F | Heavy rain, closed beaches, lowest rates and the traditional season for panchakarma. |
| Sep-Nov | Second rains easing | 24-31°C / 75-88°F | October thunderstorms, then clear skies, washed air and quiet beaches through November. |

Add any of these to a tour. A host stays beside you and tells you what is happening and why it is done that way.
Before any treatment is booked, the centre's physician reads your pulse at three points, checks your tongue and eyes and asks how you sleep. The prescription that follows governs your oil, your therapy and what the kitchen is allowed to cook for you.
At first light the Hawa Beach crews walk a long net out by catamaran and pull it in by hand up the sand. You take a place on the rope, then follow the catch to the auction where the shack owners bid.
A centre cook shows you why kanji, moong and ghee are prescribed, how to temper without chilli and what is left out during panchakarma. You make one meal yourself and eat it at the patients' table.
At the beach festival or a capital auditorium, an actor applies chutti paste in front of you while his teacher explains the nine emotions. You then watch the scene he has spent two hours preparing for.
Because no other Indian beach puts serious Ayurveda, a 40-minute airport transfer and three swimmable bays in the same place. Europeans have been coming since the 1970s, so the classified treatment centres here have decades of practice with Western patients, and the state capital with its palaces and museums is half an hour up the road.
November to March for a beach holiday, with 24 to 32°C, calm sea and lifeguard flags. April and May are humid and reach 34°C. For treatment, come in the southwest monsoon from June to August, which Ayurveda tradition regards as the most effective season and which brings the lowest rates of the year.
Fourteen days minimum, twenty-one for a full panchakarma with proper preparation and recovery phases. Anything advertised as a three or five-day panchakarma is massage, not medicine. Expect a physician's consultation first, a prescribed vegetarian diet, early nights, no alcohol and some days when you are told to do nothing at all.
Broadly yes, and the Ayurveda centres in particular are used to women staying alone for weeks. Lighthouse Beach gets touts and the occasional stare, so cover up walking to and from the sand. Use hotel cars at night rather than the unlit coastal lane, and treat the sea, not the people, as the main hazard.
US, UK and EU citizens use the India e-Visa. For a fourteen or twenty-one night course the 30-day tourist option is sufficient, but if you intend to return annually take the one-year or five-year multiple entry. Thiruvananthapuram accepts e-Visas. Some centres also issue a letter confirming your booking, which speeds up questions at immigration.
Our ground cost is about US$720 per person sharing for four nights of beaches and the capital, US$760 for the Attukal Pongala trip, US$940 for five nights including Poovar, US$2,200 for a fourteen-night Ayurveda course and US$3,100 for twenty-one nights. Treatment, consultations, prescribed meals and transfers are included.
Look for the Kerala Tourism classification: Green Leaf is the higher grade, Olive Leaf the second, both awarded after inspection of doctors, therapists, hygiene and kitchens. Insist on a consultation with a registered vaidya before therapy is chosen, and be wary of any place that sells a fixed package before anyone has examined you.
Only if you are Hindu. The temple admits Hindus alone and checks at the gate, and the dress code is strict: men wear a mundu with no shirt, women a sari or a long skirt with a blouse, and no shorts or trousers are allowed. Non-Hindus can still see Kuthiramalika Palace and the Napier Museum nearby.
Most guests pair Kovalam with one or two of these on the same trip.
